Welcome,
Here I share what I built,
the thinking that shaped it,
and the marks it left.
Let’s get into it.
_iain.
Everything in my studio is in boxes.
Tidy.
Organised.
Compartmentalised.
Each box has a singular job.
This podcast box has a mic, camera, tripod etc.
Everything I need to record an interview.

The book box holds a bone folder, scalpel, linen thread etc.
Everything I need to hand-make a book or zine.

There’s a box for everything.
There’s even a Swiss Grit box.
Lettraset, paint, tape etc.
Everything I need to live out my fantasy of travelling back in time to the 90s and writing and designing for Raygun magazine.

Job to do?
Just grab the right box and start.
Projects follow the same logic.
A dedicated space for each.
One project.
One journal.
Tidy.
Organised.
Compartmentalised.

But in this case, there’s an extra bit.
When the pages run out, it’s ready to build.
This is the rule.
This is my rule.
My constraint.
A forcing function.
Intention into action.
This is how I work.
This is how my brain works.
It’s how I spend long enough with an idea to cultivate it, but not so long that the idea withers and dies.
So now I’m onto my next project.
This digital one.
Newsletter?
Blog?
Journal?
What’s this for?
I know what other people say a Blog is supposed to be for, but that’s not for me.
I don’t believe in all that.
My business works.
The studio runs.
The work gets done.
Businesses get built.
All without one.
So, what is it really for?
And so we start.
One project.
One journal.
48 pages done.

This journal serves a practice.
The practice within the studio.
The practice of shipping creative work.
The work.
That’s the point of
thegarage.studio⇲.
It’s everything I need to build something.
Any idea.
Project.
Business.
thegarage.studio⇲ wasn’t built as a metaphor.
It’s a system.
A space designed for momentum.
For finishing.
For sending things out the door.
That’s what this Journal connects to.
Not content.
Not commentary.
Closure.
It’s where I say:
Here I made this.
Here’s what it taught me.
Now it’s done.
Onto the next.

This is not about building an audience, marketing or reputation building. It’s about building discipline. A public practice of building.
Build → Ship → Share → Repeat.
This is the work.
This is
thegarage.studio⇲
And sharing what was built,
the thinking that shaped it,
and the marks it left,
is what this
journal/newsletter/blog⇲ is for.
Now, onto the next.
