OK, creative entrepreneurs, I'm going to hurt your feelings.
You are not a Creative Genius.
You are creative.
And you might be a genius.
But you are not a Creative Genius (big C, big G).
When we think of the Creative Genius we think of a lone artist waiting for the muse to appear, to constantly hope for inspiration and to be ready to write down whatever comes to you.
This is just PR and fear.
First, we make our work sound magical and mystical, a dark art only a few understand. And then, we make our excuses. It's not your fault if you are not inspired, it's not your fault if you can't explain your thinking to lesser folks, and it's not your fault if you don't ship any work today as 'inspiration hasn't found you'. Your lack of focus, irregular work patterns and inconsistency are just part of your process; after all, isn't that what being creative is like?
But there is another way.
To seek out inspiration, will it to appear, train it to arrive on time and on command.
Someone once asked Mr. Faulkner if he wrote by inspiration or habit, and he said he wrote by inspiration, but luckily inspiration arrived at 9 every morning.
This approach puts you back in control, challenges your fear, and announces that you've conquered resistance and are ready to do the work required of you.
This is how you are creative like a PRO.
Stop waiting for inspiration to strike and turn up like a PRO if you want PRO results.
Your best work gets done at the best time when you have the best energy.
If you don't preheat the oven, the bread won't rise.
Even Usain Bolt warms up.
So how do you get yourself ready?
Experiment and observe.
There is no one-size-fits-all, you have to work out what works for you.
Q_ What time do you do your best work?
A_ Start then.
Q_ What rituals bring you to your work, ready to do your best work?
A_ Do that.
Q_ What stops you from doing your best work?
A_ Avoid that.
